Those who are wishing to becomemore active for the sake of their health often assume they must jump instantlyinto a high intensity workout to get any benefits. This is a common misconception, and studiesare finding that light-intensity exercises can offer just as many benefits asthe higher impact ones, and are more favorable for those just starting out.
During the course of a study doneby professors at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY discovered that thosewho spent more time moving around during the day had healthier insulin andtriglyceride levels than those who were sedentary. Even those that didn’t engage in the exactamount of exercise recommended by the national guidelines still receivedbenefits to their health.
“These findings demonstrate theimportance of minimizing sedentary activities, and replacing them with somelight-intensity activities,” recommends researcher Paul Loprinzi. He went on to say that it’s important to findways to minimize long periods of sitting during the day and find small ways tobe active. Pacing while on the phone, orholding walking meetings rather than sitting ones are simple ways to becomemore active while on the job.
Outside of work, a light walk orjog with a friend or a few extra loads of laundry per week can be a good way tostart becoming more active, and over time this activity can be increased intolonger periods of time and eventually one will be engaging in the fullrecommended 150 minutes of activity per week.
